Many new developments at the Resort is the aim of the New Management Team efforts to make Hunters Rest the resort it is destined to be. Their plan is to rehabilitate Hunters to the most popular venue in Rustenburg and the whole of the North West. With only a few new members employed, most of the new positions were filled by shuffling staff from within and placing employees in positions that is more conducive and beneficial for their own personal growth. This also created a very positive attitude for the existing employees and the staff is excited and positive again and share the vision of the new GM, Estelle Wainwright to make Hunters Rest another success story. With the weekend dining calendar, it is fast becoming a very popular dining venue for all the locals, day and weekend visitors from all over Gauteng.   Hunters Rest helps local Child Care Centre. Fridays are normally days for everyone to get excited about the weekends ahead and especially with the success of the Bokke in the World Cup. Not for the staff of Hunters Rest who have been working hard the last few weeks to collect donations amongst themselves to gather some much needed supplies for a local child care centre The Lighthouse in Rustenburg. The small entourage took time out of their busy schedule on Friday to deliver food and supplies to The Lighthouse. Greeted by children with big smiley faces and hugs, the group spent some time with the children of all ages. They met with Reverend Khumalo who introduced them to the children and gave them a tour of the facility. The staff stopped in at the nursery where the small children were housed. The newest addition was a 3 week old baby which stole the hearts of the staff and drew a few tears while spending some time with the children.

Hunters Rest has also embarked on a Going Green project and is donating redundant hotel linen and food to the SPCA of Rustenburg on a regular basis. A wildlife rehabilitation centre in Thabazimbi also welcomed the money and towels donations made Hunters Rest Hotel. Estelle Wainwright General Manager of Hunters Rest is a huge believer in having one's heart open to children and animals in need. When your hand is open to give, it is also open to receive.

Hunters Rest is an icon in Rustenburg, a sub-tropical paradise beautifully situated in the foothills of the Magaliesberg. This historical hotel and landmark was built way before gold was discovered in Johannesburg and remnants of Anglo-Boer war forts can be seen on the hills and mountains surrounding the hotel. The 6000 hectare restort, was once the hunting lodge of George Wellington Rex, grandson of the illustrious George Rex who - legend has it - was the forgotten son of King George III. In 1797 to avoid a scandal involving the British monarchy George was sent to Cape as Marshall of the Vice Admiralty Court and house of Hanover. On his arrival in the Cape he met a colored bondservant girl with whom he had four children.Johanna had a daughter, Carolina Margaretha Ungerer, from a previous master with whom George fathered nine children. George was adamant that all his children were illegitimate confirming the theory that the last words of King George III to his son were: "You must never marry. There must be no legitimate heirs". The reason for this request was that George III did not want George's children to have any claim to the British throne. Recent DNA testing, however, has disproved this legend. George Rex's eldest son by his second common-law wife Carolina, was Frederick Rex who married Johanna Bain from Graaf Reinet and it is their eldest son George Wellington who befriended Paul Kruger. George Wellington married Georgina Sarah Collins in 1864 and together they had 14 children. It is not known when he befriended Paul Kruger but as stories go, the then Prime Minister Paul Kruger offered George land in Johannesburg (this was before gold was discovered) or Rustenburg and George chose the land just outside Rustenburg with its beautiful prospect of the Magaliesberg Mountains over the flat veld of Johannesburg.

According to the National Heritage Council, in the early years of the Transvaal Republic, military service was paid for by the allocation of land rather than in cash, of which the government was pitifully short. In this manner Paul Kruger, an officer in the commandos from an early age and an enthusiastic participant in many of the punitive campaigns against local tribes, became a substantial landowner. Control of the Magaliesberg Mountain Range was of great importance to both the Boer and the British forces, especially the two routes between Pretoria and Rustenburg, and as a result many battles, such as the battles of Buffelspoort, Nooitgedacht and Olifantsnek were fought in the area. During 1891 and 1892 the Hunters Rest area saw some heavy fighting. The Boers, being extremely familiar with the terrain, used secret pathways across the mountains to launch guerrilla-like attacks on the British soldiers. In response, the British forces built blockhouses across the Magalies in order to restrict the movement of the Boer forces; ruins of these structures can still to be seen around Hunters Rest.

Sitting on the expansive verandah with the beautiful views of the majestic Magaliesberg one can only marvel at the history this area has witnessed - from tribal warfare to the conflicts between Boer and Brit, from great hunts to farming, the Magaliesburg has seen it all. Hunters Rest backs onto Kgaswane Mountain Reserve, a beautiful reserve that was also owned by Paul Kruger and on his death in exile in 1902 his heirs donated this farm, "Rietvallei" to the Town Council of Rustenburg. Driving up the steep and narrow road that was built over a decade ago, you can stop at the viewing deck where canons have been perfectly positioned and from where one can clearly see the stone ruins of the forts and Oliefantsnek Dam. It's amazing to see that there are no fences between Hunters Rest and Kgaswane Mountain Reserve. In 1994 the Transvaal provincial nature reserves were transferred to the North West Province and the Parks and Tourism Board was established to administer them. The Board introduced a new policy whereby neighbouring landowners could incorporate their land into the reserve while retaining full title to their property. Several owners, including Hunters Rest, availed themselves of this arrangement, enlarging the conserved area considerably.

Once in the Reserve, it is thought that it was once the home of Paul Kruger but on further investigation it turns out to be the homestead of Colonel Henry Chamney. Col. Chamney bought the farm 'Baviaanskrans' from Paul Kruger in 1903. Chamney was Irish and spent most of his early life in India. He fought in the South African War and chose to stay in the country when his regiment was disbanded. He lived on 'Baviaanskrans' - which he renamed Avonmore - until the death of his wife Cecelia in 1908 when he went back to India but he returned to the farm soon after the First World War. He built a fine house in the Cape Dutch style where he remained until his own death in 1947. The farm was sold to the Richardson family and it was Richardson who later sold the land to the Transvaal in 1981. Evidently, high on the hill above the houses, accessible only by a steep mountain path, is a small garden of remembrance where Cecelia and Henry Chamney lie buried. Small headstones around their grave commemorate Chamney's horse, his dogs and cats. Hunters Rest preserved the graves of George Wellington and his wife Georgina. The small grave yard is on the resort's property and if you pick up a site map at reception, one can visit the grave yard. Some of the children are also buried there. It is the management's and owners mission to preserve as much of the history of Hunters rest for future generations. Written by Beverley Parr, Editor, Platinum Living
